Loosing My Marbles

Material: Clear-casting resin, glass marbles
Size: 15x22.5x24
Inspiration: Listening to music, the effects of music on brain (psychology), Daydreaming (psychology),   early childhood

This piece was inspired by the fact that I HATE being interrupted when I am listening to music because I’m also interrupted in daydreaming and the creation of my Utopia.  The psychological phenomenon of daydreaming often refers to a means of escapism where a person creates wanted/needed situation in his/her head. While making the sculpture, I had no influence over the position of the marbles which is quiet effectively representing the uncontrollable thoughts and the freedom they bring. The marbles represent the diverse and colorful thoughts harboured in my mind, in this specific case the memories of the game of marbles that my grandpa and I used to play when I grew up in Slovakia (the marbles are the ones from my childhood).  The hardness of the resin substance doesn’t allow anyone to retrieve the marbles, representing how untouchable my memories are and how I can always find happiness inside of me, even when everything goes wrong. Knowing that is especially meaningful as my father once told me that “People can take everything from you, everything, except what you have in your head”.  After all, maybe the only way to prevent yourself from losing your marbles is by spilling them yourself.
