Our second term was hugely focused on getting comfortable with the technology and resources within the medical field. This includes seeing all kinds of methods of communication, gadgets used in surgeries but also learning to work with digital assets and how those can help in the medical field, for example virtual reality and education of medical students. Furthermore we explored other resources, such as museums, anatomy collections and old anatomy books.
Our visits consisted of:
1) The School of Life Sciences and Dentistry School:
Visiting the School of Life Sciences and the Dentistry School at the University of Dundee to hear
pitches for projects for independent projects from researchers, teachers and professors to
help them create aids in teaching and promotion of their work to the public domain. These were the
turned into independent, student specific projects. I have personally ended up working on 2 projects from
the Life Sciences departments.
2) Workshop for ‘Visualisation in Medicine’:
Experts from Comics and Graphics Novels MDes at the University of Dundee were educating us about how comic books can help with communication in medical field. Below is a little comic exercise that I have done with one of my classmates, Caitlyn La, about a rare and little known ‘prolapsed kidney’ condition.
3) The Ninewells Hospital and Medical School
Visiting the The Ninewells Hospital and Medical School was one of the most exciting days of the week. Dr Rodney Mountain showed us around, told us about several projects that could be done in collaboration with the medical artists. We have visited a ward, had a presentation on potential project with the Pathology ward, FATL representative, the Medical School where we tried on virtual reality headsets used in teaching about the anatomy of human heart, visited the props storage room and have seen some of the high tech surgical machinery such as the DaVinci machine.
4) The University Archives Showroom
Visiting the University of Dundee Archives to have a look at some very old anatomy atlases and photographs
5) The D’Arcy Thompson Museum
The visit of the University museum of zoological collection.
